At first glance a maelstrom of one undemanding color—yet a longer view rewards the eye with an intuition of a subtler content. The haphazard swirls resolve into an organic body; the monochromatic quality transforms into nuances and variations of hues of black, white, and red. At a point between disorder and tranquility, one waits, unhurried. And then, suddenly, a sense of wholeness.

Taking more than a year to conceptualize and execute, “Nonlinear Expressions” was commissioned by my former colleagues at EY to celebrate the retirement of Daniel Kahn, my ex-boss, mentor, and friend. A personal challenge in many ways given Daniel’s sophisticated taste in art and design and, importantly, my goal to represent something uniquely Complex Securities (the group he led) and quintessentially Daniel. So I plucked my financial engineering hat out of retirement (I left the finance world in 2017 to pursue art), emptied the nonlinear formulas out of it, and spread them on a “lognormally textured” canvas. These expressions are our tribute to Daniel, whose own career and legacy shaped many of ours in unique, idiosyncratic, and beautifully nonlinear ways.
